           Thebetterheknewhisbrother,themorehenoticedthatSergeyIvanovitch,andmanyotherpeoplewhoworkedforthepublicwelfare,werenotledbyanimpulseofthehearttocareforthepublicgood,butreasonedfromintellectualconsiderationsthatitwasarightthingtotakeinterestinpublicaffairs,andconsequentlytookinterestinthem.Levinwasconfirmedinthisgeneralizationbyobservingthathisbrotherdidnottakequestionsaffectingthepublicwelfareorthequestionoftheimmortalityofthesoulabitmoretoheartthanhedidchessproblems,ortheingeniousconstructionofanewmachine.

           Besidesthis,KonstantinLevinwasnotathiseasewithhisbrother,becauseinsummerinthecountryLevinwascontinuallybusywithworkontheland,andthelongsummerdaywasnotlongenoughforhimtogetthroughallhehadtodo,whileSergeyIvanovitchwastakingaholiday.Butthoughhewastakingaholidaynow,thatistosay,hewasdoingnowriting,hewassousedtointellectualactivitythathelikedtoputintoconciseandeloquentshapetheideasthatoccurredtohim,andlikedtohavesomeonetolistentohim.Hismostusualandnaturallistenerwashisbrother.Andsoinspiteofthefriendlinessanddirectnessoftheirrelations,Konstantinfeltanawkwardnessinleavinghimalone.SergeyIvanovitchlikedtostretchhimselfonthegrassinthesun,andtolieso,baskingandchattinglazily.
