           Buthe(heknewverywellhowhemustappeartoothers)wasacountrygentleman,occupiedinbreedingcattle,shootinggame,andbuildingbarns;inotherwords,afellowofnoability,whohadnotturnedoutwell,andwhowasdoingjustwhat,accordingtotheideasoftheworld,isdonebypeoplefitfornothingelse.

           Themysterious,enchantingKittyherselfcouldnotlovesuchanuglypersonasheconceivedhimselftobe,and,aboveall,suchanordinary,innowaystrikingperson.Moreover,hisattitudetoKittyinthepasttheattitudeofagrown-uppersontoachild,arisingfromhisfriendshipwithherbrotherseemedtohimyetanotherobstacletolove.Anugly,good-naturedman,asheconsideredhimself,might,hesupposed,belikedasafriend;buttobelovedwithsuchaloveasthatwithwhichhelovedKitty,onewouldneedtobeahandsomeand,stillmore,adistinguishedman.

           Hehadheardthatwomenoftendidcareforuglyandordinarymen,buthedidnotbelieveit,forhejudgedbyhimself,andhecouldnothimselfhavelovedanybutbeautiful,mysterious,andexceptionalwomen.
