           Shetookherseatinherhusband’scarriageinsilence,andinsilencedroveoutofthecrowdofcarriages.Inspiteofallhehadseen,AlexeyAlexandrovitchstilldidnotallowhimselftoconsiderhiswife’srealcondition.Hemerelysawtheoutwardsymptoms.Hesawthatshewasbehavingunbecomingly,andconsideredithisdutytotellherso.Butitwasverydifficultforhimnottosaymore,totellhernothingbutthat.Heopenedhismouthtotellhershehadbehavedunbecomingly,buthecouldnothelpsayingsomethingutterlydifferent.
