           ButFrou-Froudrewupherlegsandbackintheveryactofleaping,likeafallingcat,and,clearingtheothermare,alightedbeyondher.

           AftercrossingthestreamVronskyhadcompletecontrolofhismare,andbeganholdingherin,intendingtocrossthegreatbarrierbehindMahotin,andtotrytoovertakehiminthecleargroundofaboutfivehundredyardsthatfollowedit.

           Thegreatbarrierstoodjustinfrontoftheimperialpavilion.TheTsarandthewholecourtandcrowdsofpeoplewereallgazingatthemathim,andMahotinalengthaheadofhim,astheydrewnearthe“devil,”asthesolidbarrierwascalled.Vronskywasawareofthoseeyesfasteneduponhimfromallsides,buthesawnothingexcepttheearsandneckofhisownmare,thegroundracingtomeethim,andthebackandwhitelegsofGladiatorbeatingtimeswiftlybeforehim,andkeepingalwaysthesamedistanceahead.Gladiatorrose,withnosoundofknockingagainstanything.WithawaveofhisshorttailhedisappearedfromVronsky’ssight.

           “Bravo!”criedavoice.

           Atthesameinstant,underVronsky’seyes,rightbeforehimflashedthepalingsofthebarrier.Withouttheslightestchangeinheractionhismareflewoverit;thepalingsvanished,andheheardonlyacrashbehindhim.Themare,excitedbyGladiator’skeepingahead,hadrisentoosoonbeforethebarrier,andgrazeditwithherhindhoofs.Butherpaceneverchanged,andVronsky,feelingaspatterofmudinhisface,realizedthathewasoncemorethesamedistancefromGladiator.
