           Thestrong,exquisite,perfectlycorrectlinesofthestallion,withhissuperbhind-quartersandexcessivelyshortpasternsalmostoverhishoofs,attractedVronsky’sattentioninspiteofhimself.Hewouldhavegoneuptohismare,buthewasagaindetainedbyanacquaintance.

           “Oh,there’sKarenin!”saidtheacquaintancewithwhomhewaschatting.“He’slookingforhiswife,andshe’sinthemiddleofthepavilion.Didn’tyouseeher?”

           “No,”answeredVronsky,andwithoutevenglancingroundtowardsthepavilionwherehisfriendwaspointingoutMadameKarenina,hewentuptohismare.

           Vronskyhadnothadtimetolookatthesaddle,aboutwhichhehadtogivesomedirection,whenthecompetitorsweresummonedtothepaviliontoreceivetheirnumbersandplacesintherowatstarting.Seventeenofficers,lookingseriousandsevere,manywithpalefaces,mettogetherinthepavilionanddrewthenumbers.Vronskydrewthenumberseven.Thecrywasheard:“Mount!”

           Feelingthatwiththeothersridingintherace,hewasthecenteruponwhichalleyeswerefastened,Vronskywalkeduptohismareinthatstateofnervoustensioninwhichheusuallybecamedeliberateandcomposedinhismovements.Cord,inhonoroftheraces,hadputonhisbestclothes,ablackcoatbuttonedup,astifflystarchedcollar,whichproppeduphischeeks,aroundblackhat,andtopboots.Hewascalmanddignifiedasever,andwaswithhisownhandsholdingFrou-Froubybothreins,standingstraightinfrontofher.Frou-Frouwasstilltremblingasthoughinafever.Hereye,fulloffire,glancedsidewaysatVronsky.
