           “I’mnottoolate?”

           “Allright!Allright!”saidtheEnglishman;“don’tupsetyourself!”

           Vronskyoncemoretookininoneglancetheexquisitelinesofhisfavoritemare;whowasquiveringallover,andwithanefforthetorehimselffromthesightofher,andwentoutofthestable.Hewenttowardsthepavilionsatthemostfavorablemomentforescapingattention.Themile-and-a-halfracewasjustfinishing,andalleyeswerefixedonthehorse-guardinfrontandthelighthussarbehind,urgingtheirhorsesonwithalasteffortclosetothewinningpost.Fromthecenterandoutsideoftheringallwerecrowdingtothewinningpost,andagroupofsoldiersandofficersofthehorse-guardswereshoutingloudlytheirdelightattheexpectedtriumphoftheirofficerandcomrade.Vronskymovedintothemiddleofthecrowdunnoticed,almostattheverymomentwhenthebellrangatthefinishoftherace,andthetall,mudspatteredhorse-guardwhocameinfirst,bendingoverthesaddle,letgothereinsofhispantinggrayhorsethatlookeddarkwithsweat.

           Thehorse,stiffeningoutitslegs,withaneffortstoppeditsrapidcourse,andtheofficerofthehorse-guardslookedroundhimlikeamanwakingupfromaheavysleep,andjustmanagedtosmile.Acrowdoffriendsandoutsiderspressedroundhim.

           Vronskyintentionallyavoidedthatselectcrowdoftheupperworld,whichwasmovingandtalkingwithdiscreetfreedombeforethepavilions.HeknewthatMadameKareninawasthere,andBetsy,andhisbrother’swife,andhepurposelydidnotgonearthemforfearofsomethingdistractinghisattention.
