           Whenshethoughtofherson,andhisfutureattitudetohismother,whohadabandonedhisfather,shefeltsuchterroratwhatshehaddone,thatshecouldnotfaceit;but,likeawoman,couldonlytrytocomfortherselfwithlyingassurancesthateverythingwouldremainasitalwayshadbeen,andthatitwaspossibletoforgetthefearfulquestionofhowitwouldbewithherson.

           “Ibegyou,Ientreatyou,”shesaidsuddenly,takinghishand,andspeakinginquiteadifferenttone,sincereandtender,“neverspeaktomeofthat!”

           “But,Anna....”

           “Never.Leaveittome.Iknowallthebaseness,allthehorrorofmyposition;butit’snotsoeasytoarrangeasyouthink.Andleaveittome,anddowhatIsay.Neverspeaktomeofit.Doyoupromiseme?...No,no,promise!...”
