           Dressedinawhitegown,deeplyembroidered,shewassittinginacorneroftheterracebehindsomeflowers,anddidnothearhim.Bendinghercurlyblackhead,shepressedherforeheadagainstacoolwateringpotthatstoodontheparapet,andbothherlovelyhands,withtheringsheknewsowell,claspedthepot.Thebeautyofherwholefigure,herhead,herneck,herhands,struckVronskyeverytimeassomethingnewandunexpected.Hestoodstill,gazingatherinecstasy.But,directlyhewouldhavemadeasteptocomenearertoher,shewasawareofhispresence,pushedawaythewateringpot,andturnedherflushedfacetowardshim.

           “What’sthematter?Youareill?”hesaidtoherinFrench,goinguptoher.Hewouldhaveruntoher,butrememberingthattheremightbespectators,helookedroundtowardsthebalconydoor,andreddenedalittle,ashealwaysreddened,feelingthathehadtobeafraidandbeonhisguard.

           “No,I’mquitewell,”shesaid,gettingupandpressinghisoutstretchedhandtightly.“Ididnotexpect...thee.”

           “Mercy!whatcoldhands!”hesaid.

           “Youstartledme,”shesaid.“I’malone,andexpectingSeryozha;he’soutforawalk;they’llcomeinfromthisside.”

           But,inspiteofhereffortstobecalm,herlipswerequivering.

           “Forgivemeforcoming,butIcouldn’tpassthedaywithoutseeingyou,”hewenton,speakingFrench,ashealwaysdidtoavoidusingthestiffRussianpluralform,soimpossiblyfrigidbetweenthem,andthedangerouslyintimatesingular.
