           Butthenearerhecame,themoreexcitedshegrew.Onlywhenhestoodbyherhead,shewassuddenlyquieter,whilethemusclesquiveredunderhersoft,delicatecoat.Vronskypattedherstrongneck,straightenedoverhersharpwithersastraylockofhermanethathadfallenontheotherside,andmovedhisfacenearherdilatednostrils,transparentasabat’swing.Shedrewaloudbreathandsnortedoutthroughhertensenostrils,started,prickeduphersharpear,andputoutherstrong,blackliptowardsVronsky,asthoughshewouldnipholdofhissleeve.Butrememberingthemuzzle,sheshookitandagainbeganrestlesslystampingoneaftertheotherhershapelylegs.

           “Quiet,darling,quiet!”hesaid,pattingheragainoverherhind-quarters;andwithagladsensethathismarewasinthebestpossiblecondition,hewentoutofthehorse-box.
