           Evenmorethanhismare,VronskylongedtoseeGladiator,whomhehadneverseen.Butheknewthatbytheetiquetteoftheracecourseitwasnotmerelyimpossibleforhimtoseethehorse,butimpropereventoaskquestionsabouthim.Justashewaspassingalongthepassage,theboyopenedthedoorintothesecondhorse-boxontheleft,andVronskycaughtaglimpseofabigchestnuthorsewithwhitelegs.HeknewthatthiswasGladiator,but,withthefeelingofamanturningawayfromthesightofanotherman’sopenletter,heturnedroundandwentintoFrou-Frou’sstall.

           “ThehorseisherebelongingtoMak...Mak...Inevercansaythename,”saidtheEnglishman,overhisshoulder,pointinghisbigfingeranddirtynailtowardsGladiator’sstall.

           “Mahotin?Yes,he’smymostseriousrival,”saidVronsky.

           “Ifyouwereridinghim,”saidtheEnglishman,“I’dbetonyou.”

           “Frou-Frou’smorenervous;he’sstronger,”saidVronsky,smilingatthecomplimenttohisriding.

           “Inasteeplechaseitalldependsonridingandonpluck,”saidtheEnglishman.

           Ofpluckthatis,energyandcourageVronskydidnotmerelyfeelthathehadenough;whatwasoffarmoreimportance,hewasfirmlyconvincedthatnooneintheworldcouldhavemoreofthis“pluck”thanhehad.

           “Don’tyouthinkIwantmorethinningdown?”

           “Oh,no,”answeredtheEnglishman.“Please,don’tspeakloud.Themare’sfidgety,”headded,noddingtowardsthehorse-box,beforewhichtheywerestanding,andfromwhichcamethesoundofrestlessstampinginthestraw.
