           VronskyrespectedandlikedYashvinparticularlybecausehefeltYashvinlikedhim,notforhisnameandhismoney,butforhimself.AndofallmenhewastheonlyonewithwhomVronskywouldhavelikedtospeakofhislove.HefeltthatYashvin,inspiteofhisapparentcontemptforeverysortoffeeling,wastheonlymanwhocould,sohefancied,comprehendtheintensepassionwhichnowfilledhiswholelife.Moreover,hefeltcertainthatYashvin,asitwas,tooknodelightingossipandscandal,andinterpretedhisfeelingrightly,thatistosay,knewandbelievedthatthispassionwasnotajest,notapastime,butsomethingmoreseriousandimportant.

           Vronskyhadneverspokentohimofhispassion,buthewasawarethatheknewallaboutit,andthatheputtherightinterpretationonit,andhewasgladtoseethatinhiseyes.

           “Ah!yes,”hesaid,totheannouncementthatVronskyhadbeenattheTverskoys’;andhisblackeyesshining,hepluckedathisleftmustache,andbegantwistingitintohismouth,abadhabithehad.
