           Thefurtherherode,thehappierhebecame,andplansforthelandrosetohismindeachbetterthanthelast;toplantallhisfieldswithhedgesalongthesouthernborders,sothatthesnowshouldnotlieunderthem;todividethemupintosixfieldsofarableandthreeofpastureandhay;tobuildacattleyardatthefurtherendoftheestate,andtodigapondandtoconstructmovablepensforthecattleasameansofmanuringtheland.Andtheneighthundredacresofwheat,threehundredofpotatoes,andfourhundredofclover,andnotoneacreexhausted.

           Absorbedinsuchdreams,carefullykeepinghishorsebythehedges,soasnottotramplehisyoungcrops,herodeuptothelaborerswhohadbeensenttosowclover.Acartwiththeseedinitwasstanding,notattheedge,butinthemiddleofthecrop,andthewintercornhadbeentornupbythewheelsandtrampledbythehorse.Boththelaborersweresittinginthehedge,probablysmokingapipetogether.Theearthinthecart,withwhichtheseedwasmixed,wasnotcrushedtopowder,butcrustedtogetheroradheringinclods.Seeingthemaster,thelaborer,Vassily,wenttowardsthecart,whileMishkasettoworksowing.Thiswasnotasitshouldbe,butwiththelaborersLevinseldomlosthistemper.WhenVassilycameup,Levintoldhimtoleadthehorsetothehedge.

           “It’sallright,sir,it’llspringupagain,”respondedVassily.
