           PrincessMyakayacouldneverseewhyithadthateffect,butsheknewithad,andtookadvantageofit.

           AseveryonehadbeenlisteningwhilePrincessMyakayaspoke,andsotheconversationaroundtheambassador’swifehaddropped,PrincessBetsytriedtobringthewholepartytogether,andturnedtotheambassador’swife.

           “Willyoureallynothavetea?Youshouldcomeoverherebyus.”

           “No,we’reveryhappyhere,”theambassador’swiferespondedwithasmile,andshewentonwiththeconversationthathadbeenbegun.

           Itwasaveryagreeableconversation.TheywerecriticizingtheKarenins,husbandandwife.

           “AnnaisquitechangedsinceherstayinMoscow.There’ssomethingstrangeabouther,”saidherfriend.

           “ThegreatchangeisthatshebroughtbackwithhertheshadowofAlexeyVronsky,”saidtheambassador’swife.

           “Well,whatofit?There’safableofGrimm’saboutamanwithoutashadow,amanwho’slosthisshadow.Andthat’shispunishmentforsomething.Inevercouldunderstandhowitwasapunishment.Butawomanmustdislikebeingwithoutashadow.”

           “Yes,butwomenwithashadowusuallycometoabadend,”saidAnna’sfriend.

           “Badlucktoyourtongue!”saidPrincessMyakayasuddenly.“MadameKarenina’sasplendidwoman.Idon’tlikeherhusband,butIlikeherverymuch.”

           “Whydon’tyoulikeherhusband?He’ssucharemarkableman,”saidtheambassador’swife.“MyhusbandsaystherearefewstatesmenlikehiminEurope.”

           “Andmyhusbandtellsmejustthesame,butIdon’tbelieveit,”saidPrincessMyakaya.
