           ThecolonelhadcalledinVronskyjustbecauseheknewhimtobeanhonorableandintelligentman,and,morethanall,amanwhocaredforthehonoroftheregiment.Theytalkeditover,anddecidedthatPetritskyandKedrovmustgowithVronskytoVenden’stoapologize.ThecolonelandVronskywerebothfullyawarethatVronsky’snameandrankwouldbesuretocontributegreatlytothesofteningoftheinjuredhusband’sfeelings.

           Andthesetwoinfluenceswerenotinfactwithouteffect;thoughtheresultremained,asVronskyhaddescribed,uncertain.

           OnreachingtheFrenchtheater,Vronskyretiredtothefoyerwiththecolonel,andreportedtohimhissuccess,ornon-success.Thecolonel,thinkingitallover,madeuphismindnottopursuethematterfurther,butthenforhisownsatisfactionproceededtocross-examineVronskyabouthisinterview;anditwasalongwhilebeforehecouldrestrainhislaughter,asVronskydescribedhowthegovernmentclerk,aftersubsidingforawhile,wouldsuddenlyflareupagain,asherecalledthedetails,andhowVronsky,atthelasthalfwordofconciliation,skillfullymanœuveredaretreat,shovingPetritskyoutbeforehim.

           “It’sadisgracefulstory,butkilling.Kedrovreallycan’tfightthegentleman!Washesoawfullyhot?”hecommented,laughing.“ButwhatdoyousaytoClairetoday?She’smarvelous,”hewenton,speakingofanewFrenchactress.“Howeveroftenyouseeher,everydayshe’sdifferent.It’sonlytheFrenchwhocandothat.”
