           Sheavoidedherserious-mindedfriends,andwentoutintothefashionableworld.ThereshemetVronsky,andexperiencedanagitatingjoyatthosemeetings.ShemetVronskyspeciallyoftenatBetsy’sforBetsywasaVronskybybirthandhiscousin.VronskywaseverywherewherehehadanychanceofmeetingAnna,andspeakingtoher,whenhecould,ofhislove.Shegavehimnoencouragement,buteverytimeshemethimtheresurgedupinherheartthatsamefeelingofquickenedlifethathadcomeuponherthatdayintherailwaycarriagewhenshesawhimforthefirsttime.Shewasconsciousherselfthatherdelightsparkledinhereyesandcurvedherlipsintoasmile,andshecouldnotquenchtheexpressionofthisdelight.

           AtfirstAnnasincerelybelievedthatshewasdispleasedwithhimfordaringtopursueher.SoonafterherreturnfromMoscow,onarrivingatasoiréewhereshehadexpectedtomeethim,andnotfindinghimthere,sherealizeddistinctlyfromtherushofdisappointmentthatshehadbeendeceivingherself,andthatthispursuitwasnotmerelynotdistastefultoher,butthatitmadethewholeinterestofherlife.

           Thecelebratedsingerwassingingforthesecondtime,andallthefashionableworldwasinthetheater.Vronsky,seeinghiscousinfromhisstallinthefrontrow,didnotwaittilltheentr’acte,butwenttoherbox.

           “Whydidn’tyoucometodinner?”shesaidtohim.“Imarvelatthesecondsightoflovers,”sheaddedwithasmile,sothatnoonebuthecouldhear;“shewasn’tthere.Butcomeaftertheopera.”
