           Helistenedtoherhard,heavybreathing,andhewasunutterablysorryforher.Shetriedseveraltimestobegintospeak,butcouldnot.Hewaited.

           “Yourememberthechildren,Stiva,toplaywiththem;butIrememberthem,andknowthatthismeanstheirruin,”shesaidobviouslyoneofthephrasesshehadmorethanoncerepeatedtoherselfinthecourseofthelastfewdays.

           Shehadcalledhim“Stiva,”andheglancedatherwithgratitude,andmovedtotakeherhand,butshedrewbackfromhimwithaversion.

           “Ithinkofthechildren,andforthatreasonIwoulddoanythingintheworldtosavethem,butIdon’tmyselfknowhowtosavethem.Bytakingthemawayfromtheirfather,orbyleavingthemwithaviciousfatheryes,aviciousfather....Tellme,afterwhat...hashappened,canwelivetogether?Isthatpossible?Tellme,eh,isitpossible?”sherepeated,raisinghervoice,“aftermyhusband,thefatherofmychildren,entersintoaloveaffairwithhisownchildren’sgoverness?”

           “ButwhatcouldIdo?whatcouldIdo?”hekeptsayinginapitifulvoice,notknowingwhathewassaying,ashisheadsanklowerandlower.

           “Youareloathsometome,repulsive!”sheshrieked,gettingmoreandmoreheated.“Yourtearsmeannothing!Youhaveneverlovedme;youhaveneitherheartnorhonorablefeeling!Youarehatefultome,disgusting,astrangeryes,acompletestranger!”Withpainandwrathsheutteredthewordsoterribletoherselfstranger.

           Helookedather,andthefuryexpressedinherfacealarmedandamazedhim.Hedidnotunderstandhowhispityforherexasperatedher.
