           KonstantinLevinlookedinatthedoor,andsawthatthespeakerwasayoungmanwithanimmenseshockofhair,wearingaRussianjerkin,andthatapockmarkedwomaninawoolengown,withoutcollarorcuffs,wassittingonthesofa.Hisbrotherwasnottobeseen.Konstantinfeltasharppangathisheartatthethoughtofthestrangecompanyinwhichhisbrotherspenthislife.Noonehadheardhim,andKonstantin,takingoffhisgaloshes,listenedtowhatthegentlemaninthejerkinwassaying.Hewasspeakingofsomeenterprise.

           “Well,thedevilflaythem,theprivilegedclasses,”hisbrother’svoiceresponded,withacough.“Masha!getussomesupperandsomewineifthere’sanyleft;orelsegoandgetsome.”

           Thewomanrose,cameoutfrombehindthescreen,andsawKonstantin.

           “There’ssomegentleman,NikolayDmitrievitch,”shesaid.

           “Whomdoyouwant?”saidthevoiceofNikolayLevin,angrily.

           “It’sI,”answeredKonstantinLevin,comingforwardintothelight.

           “Who’sI?”Nikolay’svoicesaidagain,stillmoreangrily.Hecouldbeheardgettinguphurriedly,stumblingagainstsomething,andLevinsaw,facinghiminthedoorway,thebig,scaredeyes,andthehuge,thin,stoopingfigureofhisbrother,sofamiliar,andyetastonishinginitsweirdnessandsickliness.

           Hewaseventhinnerthanthreeyearsbefore,whenKonstantinLevinhadseenhimlast.Hewaswearingashortcoat,andhishandsandbigbonesseemedhugerthanever.Hishairhadgrownthinner,thesamestraightmustacheshidhislips,thesameeyesgazedstrangelyandnaïvelyathisvisitor.
