           Fortunatelyforhim,atthisperiodsodifficultforhimfromthefailureofhisbook,thevariouspublicquestionsofthedissentingsects,oftheAmericanalliance,oftheSamarafamine,ofexhibitions,andofspiritualism,weredefinitelyreplacedinpublicinterestbytheSlavonicquestion,whichhadhithertoratherlanguidlyinterestedsociety,andSergeyIvanovitch,whohadbeenoneofthefirsttoraisethissubject,threwhimselfintoitheartandsoul.

           InthecircletowhichSergeyIvanovitchbelonged,nothingwastalkedoforwrittenaboutjustnowbuttheServianWar.EverythingthattheidlecrowdusuallydoestokilltimewasdonenowforthebenefitoftheSlavonicStates.Balls,concerts,dinners,matchboxes,ladies’dresses,beer,restaurantseverythingtestifiedtosympathywiththeSlavonicpeoples.

           Frommuchofwhatwasspokenandwrittenonthesubject,SergeyIvanovitchdifferedonvariouspoints.HesawthattheSlavonicquestionhadbecomeoneofthosefashionabledistractionswhichsucceedoneanotherinprovidingsocietywithanobjectandanoccupation.Hesaw,too,thatagreatmanypeopleweretakingupthesubjectfrommotivesofself-interestandself-advertisement.Herecognizedthatthenewspaperspublishedagreatdealthatwassuperfluousandexaggerated,withthesoleaimofattractingattentionandoutbiddingoneanother.
