           Whentheycamebacktohim,hestudiouslydrovethemaway,regardingthemasshamefulandgirlish,belowthedignityofaboyandaschoolboy.Heknewthathisfatherandmotherwereseparatedbysomequarrel,heknewthathehadtoremainwithhisfather,andhetriedtogetusedtothatidea.

           Hedislikedseeinghisuncle,solikehismother,foritcalledupthosememoriesofwhichhewasashamed.Hedislikeditallthemoreasfromsomewordshehadcaughtashewaitedatthestudydoor,andstillmorefromthefacesofhisfatheranduncle,heguessedthattheymusthavebeentalkingofhismother.Andtoavoidcondemningthefatherwithwhomhelivedandonwhomhewasdependent,and,aboveall,toavoidgivingwaytosentimentality,whichheconsideredsodegrading,Seryozhatriednottolookathisunclewhohadcometodisturbhispeaceofmind,andnottothinkofwhatherecalledtohim.

           ButwhenStepanArkadyevitch,goingoutafterhim,sawhimonthestairs,andcallingtohim,askedhimhowhespenthisplaytimeatschool,Seryozhatalkedmorefreelytohimawayfromhisfather’spresence.

           “Wehavearailwaynow,”hesaidinanswertohisuncle’squestion.“It’slikethis,doyousee:twositonabenchthey’rethepassengers;andonestandsupstraightonthebench.Andallareharnessedtoitbytheirarmsorbytheirbelts,andtheyrunthroughalltheroomsthedoorsareleftopenbeforehand.Well,andit’sprettyhardworkbeingtheconductor!”
