           ThoughtherewassolittlethatwascomplexorartificialinKitty’scharacteringeneral,Levinwasstruckbywhatwasrevealednow,whensuddenlyalldisguiseswerethrownoffandtheverykernelofhersoulshoneinhereyes.Andinthissimplicityandnakednessofhersoul,she,theverywomanhelovedinher,wasmoremanifestthanever.Shelookedathim,smiling;butallatonceherbrowstwitched,shethrewupherhead,andgoingquicklyuptohim,clutchedhishandandpressedcloseuptohim,breathingherhotbreathuponhim.Shewasinpainandwas,asitwere,complainingtohimofhersuffering.Andforthefirstminute,fromhabit,itseemedtohimthathewastoblame.Butinhereyestherewasatendernessthattoldhimthatshewasfarfromreproachinghim,thatshelovedhimforhersufferings.“IfnotI,whoistoblameforit?”hethoughtunconsciously,seekingsomeoneresponsibleforthissufferingforhimtopunish;buttherewasnooneresponsible.Shewassuffering,complaining,andtriumphinginhersufferings,andrejoicinginthem,andlovingthem.Hesawthatsomethingsublimewasbeingaccomplishedinhersoul,butwhat?Hecouldnotmakeitout.Itwasbeyondhisunderstanding.

           “Ihavesenttomamma.YougoquicklytofetchLizavetaPetrovna...Kostya!...Nothing,it’sover.”

           Shemovedawayfromhimandrangthebell.

           “Well,gonow;Pasha’scoming.Iamallright.”

           AndLevinsawwithastonishmentthatshehadtakenuptheknittingshehadbroughtininthenightandbegunworkingatitagain.
