           Hetookpartintheconversationthatwascontinuedinthestreet,astheyallthreewalkedtothebuildingsoftheolduniversity.

           Themeetinghadalreadybegun.Roundthecloth-coveredtable,atwhichKatavasovandMetrovseatedthemselves,thereweresomehalf-dozenpersons,andoneofthesewasbendingcloseoveramanuscript,readingsomethingaloud.Levinsatdowninoneoftheemptychairsthatwerestandingroundthetable,andinawhisperaskedastudentsittingnearwhatwasbeingread.Thestudent,eyeingLevinwithdispleasure,said:

           “Biography.”

           ThoughLevinwasnotinterestedinthebiography,hecouldnothelplistening,andlearnedsomenewandinterestingfactsaboutthelifeofthedistinguishedmanofscience.

           Whenthereaderhadfinished,thechairmanthankedhimandreadsomeversesofthepoetMentsenthimonthejubilee,andsaidafewwordsbywayofthankstothepoet.ThenKatavasovinhisloud,ringingvoicereadhisaddressonthescientificlaborsofthemanwhosejubileewasbeingkept.

           WhenKatavasovhadfinished,Levinlookedathiswatch,sawitwaspastone,andthoughtthattherewouldnotbetimebeforetheconcerttoreadMetrovhisbook,andindeed,hedidnotnowcaretodoso.Duringthereadinghehadthoughtovertheirconversation.HesawdistinctlynowthatthoughMetrov’sideasmightperhapshavevalue,hisownideashadavaluetoo,andtheirideascouldonlybemadeclearandleadtosomethingifeachworkedseparatelyinhischosenpath,andthatnothingwouldbegainedbyputtingtheirideastogether
