           Thedistrictmarshalswalkedcarryingplates,onwhichwereballs,fromtheirtablestothehightable,andtheelectionbegan.

           “Putitintherightside,”whisperedStepanArkadyevitch,aswithhisbrotherLevinfollowedthemarshalofhisdistricttothetable.ButLevinhadforgottenbynowthecalculationsthathadbeenexplainedtohim,andwasafraidStepanArkadyevitchmightbemistakeninsaying“therightside.”SurelySnetkovwastheenemy.Ashewentup,heheldtheballinhisrighthand,butthinkinghewaswrong,justattheboxhechangedtothelefthand,andundoubtedlyputtheballtotheleft.Anadeptinthebusiness,standingattheboxandseeingbythemereactionoftheelbowwhereeachputhisball,scowledwithannoyance.Itwasnogoodforhimtousehisinsight.

           Everythingwasstill,andthecountingoftheballswasheard.Thenasinglevoiceroseandproclaimedthenumbersforandagainst.Themarshalhadbeenvotedforbyaconsiderablemajority.Allwasnoiseandeagermovementtowardsthedoors.Snetkovcamein,andthenoblesthrongedroundhim,congratulatinghim.

           “Well,nowisitover?”LevinaskedSergeyIvanovitch.

           “It’sonlyjustbeginning,”Sviazhskysaid,replyingforSergeyIvanovitchwithasmile.“Someothercandidatemayreceivemorevotesthanthemarshal.”

           Levinhadquiteforgottenaboutthat.Nowhecouldonlyrememberthattherewassomesortoftrickeryinit,buthewastooboredtothinkwhatitwasexactly.Hefeltdepressed,andlongedtogetoutofthecrowd.
