           Forherthiswasoneofthosediscoveriestheconsequencesanddeductionsfromwhicharesoimmensethatallthatonefeelsforthefirstinstantisthatitisimpossibletotakeitallin,andthatonewillhavetoreflectagreat,greatdealuponit.

           Thisdiscovery,suddenlythrowinglightonallthosefamiliesofoneortwochildren,whichhadhithertobeensoincomprehensibletoher,arousedsomanyideas,reflections,andcontradictoryemotions,thatshehadnothingtosay,andsimplygazedwithwide-openeyesofwonderatAnna.Thiswastheverythingshehadbeendreamingof,butnowlearningthatitwaspossible,shewashorrified.Shefeltthatitwastoosimpleasolutionoftoocomplicatedaproblem.

           “N’est-cepasimmoral?”wasallshesaid,afterabriefpause.

           Shemovedherwhitehandsinacurvebeforeherwaistwithextraordinaryrapidity,ashappensduringmomentsofexcitement;ideasandmemoriesrushedintoDaryaAlexandrovna’shead.
