           ItwasevidentthatitallrestednomoreuponAnnathanuponVeslovsky.She,Sviazhsky,theprincess,andVeslovsky,wereequallyguests,withlightheartsenjoyingwhathadbeenarrangedforthem.

           Annawasthehostessonlyinconductingtheconversation.Theconversationwasadifficultonefortheladyofthehouseatasmalltablewithpersonspresent,likethestewardandthearchitect,belongingtoacompletelydifferentworld,strugglingnottobeoverawedbyanelegancetowhichtheywereunaccustomed,andunabletosustainalargeshareinthegeneralconversation.ButthisdifficultconversationAnnadirectedwithherusualtactandnaturalness,andindeedshedidsowithactualenjoyment,asDaryaAlexandrovnaobserved.TheconversationbeganabouttherowTushkevitchandVeslovskyhadtakenalonetogetherintheboat,andTushkevitchbegandescribingthelastboatracesinPetersburgattheYachtClub.ButAnna,seizingthefirstpause,atonceturnedtothearchitecttodrawhimoutofhissilence.

           “NikolayIvanitchwasstruck,”shesaid,meaningSviazhsky,“attheprogressthenewbuildinghadmadesincehewasherelast;butIamthereeveryday,andeverydayIwonderattherateatwhichitgrows.”
