           Butthewholeatmosphereofthenursery,andespeciallytheEnglishnurse,DaryaAlexandrovnadidnotlikeatall.ItwasonlyonthesuppositionthatnogoodnursewouldhaveenteredsoirregularahouseholdasAnna’sthatDaryaAlexandrovnacouldexplaintoherselfhowAnnawithherinsightintopeoplecouldtakesuchanunprepossessing,disreputable-lookingwomanasnursetoherchild.

           Besides,fromafewwordsthatweredropped,DaryaAlexandrovnasawatoncethatAnna,thetwonurses,andthechildhadnocommonexistence,andthatthemother’svisitwassomethingexceptional.Annawantedtogetthebabyherplaything,andcouldnotfindit.
