           Butthesequestionsofthepresentweresucceededbyquestionsoftheimmediatefuture.ShebeganthinkinghowshehadtogetanewflatinMoscowforthecomingwinter,torenewthedrawing-roomfurniture,andtomakehereldergirlacloak.Thenquestionsofthemoreremotefutureoccurredtoher:howshewastoplaceherchildrenintheworld.“Thegirlsareallright,”shethought;“buttheboys?”

           “It’sverywellthatI’mteachingGrisha,butofcoursethat’sonlybecauseIamfreemyselfnow,I’mnotwithchild.Stiva,ofcourse,there’snocountingon.Andwiththehelpofgood-naturedfriendsIcanbringthemup;butifthere’sanotherbabycoming?...”Andthethoughtstruckherhowuntrulyitwassaidthatthecurselaidonwomanwasthatinsorrowsheshouldbringforthchildren.

           “Thebirthitself,that’snothing;butthemonthsofcarryingthechildthat’swhat’ssointolerable,”shethought,picturingtoherselfherlastpregnancy,andthedeathofthelastbaby.Andsherecalledtheconversationshehadjusthadwiththeyoungwomanattheinn.Onbeingaskedwhethershehadanychildren,thehandsomeyoungwomanhadansweredcheerfully:

           “Ihadagirlbaby,butGodsetmefree;IburiedherlastLent.”

           “Well,didyougrieveverymuchforher?”askedDaryaAlexandrovna.

           “Whygrieve?Theoldmanhasgrandchildrenenoughasitis.Itwasonlyatrouble.Noworking,nornothing.Onlyatie.”

           ThisanswerhadstruckDaryaAlexandrovnaasrevoltinginspiteofthegood-naturedandpleasingfaceoftheyoungwoman;butnowshecouldnothelprecallingthesewords.
