           “Howso?”Vassenkabeganinsurprise.“Todrivewhere?”

           “Foryoutodrivetothestation,”Levinsaidgloomily.

           “Areyougoingaway,orhassomethinghappened?”

           “IthappensthatIexpectvisitors,”saidLevin,hisstrongfingersmoreandmorerapidlybreakingofftheendsofthesplitstick.“AndI’mnotexpectingvisitors,andnothinghashappened,butIbegyoutogoaway.Youcanexplainmyrudenessasyoulike.”

           Vassenkadrewhimselfup.

           “Ibegyoutoexplain....”hesaidwithdignity,understandingatlast.

           TheshrugandthesmiledidnotirritateLevin.
