           TheconversationVassenkahadstartedwithKittywasrunningonthesamelinesasonthepreviousevening,discussingAnna,andwhetherloveistobeputhigherthanworldlyconsiderations.Kittydislikedtheconversation,andshewasdisturbedbothbythesubjectandthetoneinwhichitwasconducted,andalsobytheknowledgeoftheeffectitwouldhaveonherhusband.Butshewastoosimpleandinnocenttoknowhowtocutshortthisconversation,oreventoconcealthesuperficialpleasureaffordedherbytheyoungman’sveryobviousadmiration.Shewantedtostopit,butshedidnotknowwhattodo.Whatevershedidsheknewwouldbeobservedbyherhusband,andtheworstinterpretationputonit.And,infact,whensheaskedDollywhatwaswrongwithMasha,andVassenka,waitingtillthisuninterestingconversationwasover,begantogazeindifferentlyatDolly,thequestionstruckLevinasanunnaturalanddisgustingpieceofhypocrisy.

           “Byallmeans,please,andIshallcometoo,”saidKitty,andsheblushed.ShewantedfrompolitenesstoaskVassenkawhetherhewouldcome,andshedidnotaskhim.“Whereareyougoing,Kostya?”sheaskedherhusbandwithaguiltyface,ashepassedbyherwitharesolutestep.Thisguiltyairconfirmedallhissuspicions.
