           "Howdareyoutouchhim,anyofyou? HowdareyoucasteyesonhimwhenIhadforbiddenit? Back,Itellyouall! Thismanbelongstome! Bewarehowyoumeddlewithhim,oryou’llhavetodealwithme." 

           Thefairgirl,withalaughofribaldcoquetry,turnedtoanswerhim. "Youyourselfneverloved.Youneverlove!" Onthistheotherwomenjoined,andsuchamirthless,hard,soullesslaughterrangthroughtheroomthatitalmostmademefainttohear. Itseemedlikethepleasureoffiends. 

           ThentheCountturned,afterlookingatmyfaceattentively,andsaidinasoftwhisper, "Yes,Itoocanlove.Youyourselvescantellitfromthepast.Isitnotso? Well,nowIpromiseyouthatwhenIamdonewithhimyoushallkisshimatyourwill. Nowgo! Go! Imustawakenhim,forthereisworktobedone." 

           "Arewetohavenothingtonight?" saidoneofthem,withalowlaugh,asshepointedtothebagwhichhehadthrownuponthefloor,andwhichmovedasthoughthereweresomelivingthingwithinit. Foranswerhenoddedhishead.
