           DidIforget! ShallIever...canIever! Cananyofuseverforgetthatterriblescene! Minastruggledhardtokeepherbravecountenance,butthepainovermasteredherandsheputherhandsbeforeherface,andshudderedwhilstshemoaned. VanHelsinghadnotintendedtorecallherfrightfulexperience. Hehadsimplylostsightofherandherpartintheaffairinhisintellectualeffort. 

           Whenitstruckhimwhathesaid,hewashorrifiedathisthoughtlessnessandtriedtocomforther. 

           "Oh,MadamMina,"hesaid,"dear,dear,MadamMina,alas! ThatIofallwhosoreverenceyoushouldhavesaidanythingsoforgetful. Thesestupidoldlipsofmineandthisstupidoldheaddonotdeserveso, butyouwillforgetit,willyounot?" Hebentlowbesideherashespoke. 

           Shetookhishand,andlookingathimthroughhertears,saidhoarsely, "No,Ishallnotforget,foritiswellthatIremember. AndwithitIhavesomuchinmemoryofyouthatissweet,thatItakeitalltogether. Now,youmustallbegoingsoon. Breakfastisready,andwemustalleatthatwemaybestrong." 

           Breakfastwasastrangemealtousall. Wetriedtobecheerfulandencourageeachother,andMinawasthebrightestandmostcheerfulofus. Whenitwasover,VanHelsingstoodupandsaid, "Now,mydearfriends,wegoforthtoourterribleenterprise. Areweallarmed,aswewereonthatnightwhenfirstwevisitedourenemy’slair.
