           Hetookitwithagratefulbow,andsaid, "MayIreadit?" 

           "Ifyouwish,"IansweredasdemurelyasIcould. Heopenedit,andforaninstanthisfacefell. Thenhestoodupandbowed. 

           "Oh,yousocleverwoman!"hesaid. "IknewlongthatMr.Jonathanwasamanofmuchthankfulness,butsee,hiswifehaveallthegoodthings. Andwillyounotsomuchhonourmeandsohelpmeastoreaditforme? Alas! Iknownottheshorthand." 

           Bythistimemylittlejokewasover,andIwasalmostashamed. SoItookthetypewrittencopyfrommyworkbasketandhandedittohim. 

           "Forgiveme,"Isaid. "Icouldnothelpit,butIhadbeenthinkingthatitwasofdearLucythatyouwishedtoask,andsothatyoumightnothavetimetowait,notonmyaccount,butbecauseIknowyourtimemustbeprecious,Ihavewrittenitoutonthetypewriterforyou." 

           Hetookitandhiseyesglistened."Youaresogood,"hesaid. "AndmayIreaditnow? ImaywanttoaskyousomethingswhenIhaveread." 

           "Byallmeans,"Isaid,"readitoverwhilstIorderlunch,andthenyoucanaskmequestionswhilstweeat." 

           Hebowedandsettledhimselfinachairwithhisbacktothelight,andbecamesoabsorbedinthepapers,whilstIwenttoseeafterlunchchieflyinorderthathemightnotbedisturbed. WhenIcameback,Ifoundhimwalkinghurriedlyupanddowntheroom,hisfaceallablazewithexcitement. Herusheduptomeandtookmebybothhands. 

           "Oh,MadamMina,"hesaid,"howcanIsaywhatIowetoyou? Thispaperisassunshine. Itopensthegatetome.
