           Veryshortlyaftersheopenedhereyesinalltheirsoftness,andputtingoutherpoor,pale,thinhand,tookVanHelsing’sgreatbrownone,drawingitclosetoher,shekissedit. "Mytruefriend,"shesaid,inafaintvoice,butwithuntellablepathos, "Mytruefriend,andhis!Oh,guardhim,andgivemepeace!" 

           "Iswearit!"hesaidsolemnly,kneelingbesideherandholdinguphishand,asonewhoregistersanoath. ThenheturnedtoArthur,andsaidtohim, "Come,mychild,takeherhandinyours,andkissherontheforehead,andonlyonce." 

           Theireyesmetinsteadoftheirlips,andsotheyparted. Lucy’seyesclosed,andVanHelsing,whohadbeenwatchingclosely,tookArthur’sarm,anddrewhimaway. 

           AndthenLucy’sbreathingbecamestertorousagain,andallatonceitceased. 

           "Itisallover,"saidVanHelsing. "Sheisdead!" 

           ItookArthurbythearm,andledhimawaytothedrawingroom,wherehesatdown,andcoveredhisfacewithhishands,sobbinginawaythatnearlybrokemedowntosee. 

           Iwentbacktotheroom,andfoundVanHelsinglookingatpoorLucy,andhisfacewassternerthanever. Somechangehadcomeoverherbody. Deathhadgivenbackpartofherbeauty,forherbrowandcheekshadrecoveredsomeoftheirflowinglines. Eventhelipshadlosttheirdeadlypallor. Itwasasiftheblood,nolongerneededfortheworkingoftheheart,hadgonetomaketheharshnessofdeathaslittlerudeasmightbe. 

           "Wethoughtherdyingwhilstsheslept, Andsleepingwhenshedied."
