23August. —"Theexpectedalwayshappens." HowwellDisraeliknewlife. Ourbirdwhenhefoundthecageopenwouldnotfly,soalloursubtlearrangementswerefornought. Atanyrate,wehaveprovedonething,thatthespellsofquietnesslastareasonabletime. Weshallinfuturebeabletoeasehisbondsforafewhourseachday. Aswewereholdinghimastrangethinghappened. Hesuddenlyredoubledhisefforts,andthenassuddenlygrewcalm.
