Makingstraightforthesteepcliff,wherethechurchyardhangsoverthelanewaytotheEastPiersosteeplythatsomeoftheflattombstones,thruffsteansorthrough-stones,astheycalltheminWhitbyvernacular,actuallyprojectoverwherethesustainingcliffhasfallenaway,itdisappearedinthedarkness,whichseemedintensifiedjustbeyondthefocusofthesearchlight.
ItsohappenedthattherewasnooneatthemomentonTateHillPier,asallthosewhosehousesareincloseproximitywereeitherinbedorwereoutontheheightsabove. Thusthecoastguardondutyontheeasternsideoftheharbour,whoatoncerandowntothelittlepier,wasthefirsttoclimbaboard. Themenworkingthesearchlight,afterscouringtheentranceoftheharbourwithoutseeinganything,thenturnedthelightonthederelictandkeptitthere. Thecoastguardranaft,andwhenhecamebesidethewheel,bentovertoexamineit,andrecoiledatonceasthoughundersomesuddenemotion. Thisseemedtopiquegeneralcuriosity,andquiteanumberofpeoplebegantorun.
ItisagoodwayroundfromtheWestCliffbytheDraw-bridgetoTateHillPier,butyourcorrespondentisafairlygoodrunner,andcamewellaheadofthecrowd. WhenIarrived,however,Ifoundalreadyassembledonthepieracrowd,whomthecoastguardandpolicerefusedtoallowtocomeonboard. Bythecourtesyofthechiefboatman,Iwas,asyourcorrespondent,permittedtoclimbondeck,andwasoneofasmallgroupwhosawthedeadseamanwhilstactuallylashedtothewheel.
Itwasnowonderthatthecoastguardwassurprised,orevenawed,fornotoftencansuchasighthavebeenseen. Themanwassimplyfastenedbyhishands,tiedoneovertheother,toaspokeofthewheel.
