           Hereandthereafishingboat,witharagofsail,runningmadlyforshelterbeforetheblast,nowandagainthewhitewingsofastorm-tossedseabird. OnthesummitoftheEastCliffthenewsearchlightwasreadyforexperiment,buthadnotyetbeentried.Theofficersinchargeofitgotitintoworkingorder,andinthepausesofonrushingmistsweptwithitthesurfaceofthesea. Onceortwiceitsservicewasmosteffective,aswhenafishingboat,withgunwaleunderwater,rushedintotheharbour,able,bytheguidanceoftheshelteringlight,toavoidthedangerofdashingagainstthepiers. Aseachboatachievedthesafetyoftheporttherewasashoutofjoyfromthemassofpeopleontheshore,ashoutwhichforamomentseemedtocleavethegaleandwasthensweptawayinitsrush. 

           Beforelongthesearchlightdiscoveredsomedistanceawayaschoonerwithallsailsset,apparentlythesamevesselwhichhadbeennoticedearlierintheevening. Thewindhadbythistimebackedtotheeast,andtherewasashudderamongstthewatchersonthecliffastheyrealizedtheterribledangerinwhichshenowwas. 

           Betweenherandtheportlaythegreatflatreefonwhichsomanygoodshipshavefromtimetotimesuffered,and,withthewindblowingfromitspresentquarter,itwouldbequiteimpossiblethatsheshouldfetchtheentranceoftheharbour. 

           Itwasnownearlythehourofhightide,butthewavesweresogreatthatintheirtroughstheshallowsoftheshorewerealmostvisible,andtheschooner,withallsailsset,wasrushingwithsuchspeedthat,inthewordsofoneoldsalt,"shemustfetchupsomewhere,ifitwasonlyinhell".
