           Theexperiencewasnotlostonthepainters,anddoubtlesssomeofthesketchesofthe‘PreludetotheGreatStorm’willgracetheR.AandR.I.wallsinMaynext. 

           Morethanonecaptainmadeuphismindthenandtherethathis‘cobble’orhis‘mule’,astheytermthedifferentclassesofboats,wouldremainintheharbourtillthestormhadpassed. Thewindfellawayentirelyduringtheevening,andatmidnighttherewasadeadcalm,asultryheat,andthatprevailingintensitywhich,ontheapproachofthunder,affectspersonsofasensitivenature. 

           Therewerebutfewlightsinsightatsea,foreventhecoastingsteamers,whichusuallyhugtheshoresoclosely,keptwelltoseaward,andbutfewfishingboatswereinsight. Theonlysailnoticeablewasaforeignschoonerwithallsailsset,whichwasseeminglygoingwestwards. Thefoolhardinessorignoranceofherofficerswasaprolificthemeforcommentwhilstsheremainedinsight,andeffortsweremadetosignalhertoreducesailinthefaceofherdanger. Beforethenightshutdownshewasseenwithsailsidlyflappingasshegentlyrolledontheundulatingswellofthesea. 

           "Asidleasapaintedshipuponapaintedocean." 

           Shortlybeforeteno’clockthestillnessoftheairgrewquiteoppressive,andthesilencewassomarkedthatthebleatingofasheepinlandorthebarkingofadoginthetownwasdistinctlyheard,andthebandonthepier,withitslivelyFrenchair,waslikeadischordinthegreatharmonyofnature’ssilence. Alittleaftermidnightcameastrangesoundfromoverthesea,andhighoverheadtheairbegantocarryastrange,faint,hollowbooming.
