           Itwasaveryaged,ghostlyplace;thechurchhadbeenbuiltmanyhundredsofyearsago,andhadoncehadaconventormonasteryattached;forarchesinruins,remainsoforielwindows,andfragmentsofblackenedwalls,wereyetstanding;whileotherportionsoftheoldbuilding,whichhadcrumbledawayandfallendown,weremingledwiththechurchyardearthandovergrownwithgrass,asiftheytooclaimedaburying-placeandsoughttomixtheirasheswiththedustofmen.Hardbythesegravestonesofdeadyears,andformingapartoftheruinwhichsomepainshadbeentakentorenderhabitableinmoderntimes,weretwosmalldwellingswithsunkenwindowsandoakendoors,fasthasteningtodecay,emptyanddesolate.

           Uponthesetenements,theattentionofthechildbecameexclusivelyriveted.Sheknewnotwhy.Thechurch,theruin,theantiquatedgraves,hadequalclaimsatleastuponastranger’sthoughts,butfromthemomentwhenhereyesfirstrestedonthesetwodwellings,shecouldturntonothingelse.Evenwhenshehadmadethecircuitoftheenclosure,and,returningtotheporch,satpensivelywaitingfortheirfriend,shetookherstationwhereshecouldstilllookuponthem,andfeltasiffascinatedtowardsthatspot.
