           Uponherbedofashes,andamidstthesqualidhorrorsthroughwhichtheyhadforcedtheirway,visionsofsuchscenesbeautifulindeed,butnotmorebeautifulthanthissweetrealityhadbeenalwayspresenttohermind.Theyhadseemedtomeltintoadimandairydistance,astheprospectofeverbeholdingthemagaingrewfainter;but,astheyreceded,shehadlovedandpantedforthemmore.

           ‘Imustleaveyousomewhereforafewminutes,’saidtheschoolmaster,atlengthbreakingthesilenceintowhichtheyhadfallenintheirgladness.‘Ihavealettertopresent,andinquiriestomake,youknow.WhereshallItakeyou?Tothelittleinnyonder?’

           ‘Letuswaithere,’rejoinedNell.‘Thegateisopen.Wewillsitinthechurchporchtillyoucomeback.’

           ‘Agoodplacetoo,’saidtheschoolmaster,leadingthewaytowardsit,disencumberinghimselfofhisportmanteau,andplacingitonthestoneseat.‘BesurethatIcomebackwithgoodnews,andamnotlonggone!’

           So,thehappyschoolmasterputonabran-newpairofgloveswhichhehadcarriedinalittleparcelinhispocketalltheway,andhurriedoff,fullofardourandexcitement.

           Thechildwatchedhimfromtheporchuntiltheinterveningfoliagehidhimfromherview,andthensteppedsoftlyoutintotheoldchurchyardsosolemnandquietthateveryrustleofherdressuponthefallenleaves,whichstrewedthepathandmadeherfootstepsnoiseless,seemedaninvasionofitssilence
