           Atlengththeyhadleftthevillagefarbehind,andevenlostsightofthesmokeamongthetrees.Theytrudgedonwardnow,ataquickerpace,resolvingtokeepthemainroad,andgowhereveritmightleadthem.

           Butmainroadsstretchalong,longway.Withtheexceptionoftwoorthreeinconsiderableclustersofcottageswhichtheypassed,withoutstopping,andonelonelyroad-sidepublic-housewheretheyhadsomebreadandcheese,thishighwayhadledthemtonothinglateintheafternoonandstilllengthenedout,farinthedistance,thesamedull,tedious,windingcourse,thattheyhadbeenpursuingallday.Astheyhadnoresource,however,buttogoforward,theystillkepton,thoughatamuchslowerpace,beingverywearyandfatigued.

           Theafternoonhadwornawayintoabeautifulevening,whentheyarrivedatapointwheretheroadmadeasharpturnandstruckacrossacommon.Ontheborderofthiscommon,andclosetothehedgewhichdivideditfromthecultivatedfields,acaravanwasdrawnuptorest;uponwhich,byreasonofitssituation,theycamesosuddenlythattheycouldnothaveavoideditiftheywould.

           Itwasnotashabby,dingy,dustycart,butasmartlittlehouseuponwheels,withwhitedimitycurtainsfestooningthewindows,andwindow-shuttersofgreenpickedoutwithpanelsofastaringred,inwhichhappily-contrastedcoloursthewholeconcernshonebrilliant.Neitherwasitapoorcaravandrawnbyasingledonkeyoremaciatedhorse,forapairofhorsesinprettygoodconditionwerereleasedfromtheshaftsandgrazingonthefrouzygrass.
