           ‘Now,MrsQuilp,’saidthedwarfwhentheyhadenteredtheshop,‘goyouupstairs,ifyouplease,toNelly’sroom,andtellherthatshe’swanted.’

           ‘Youseemtomakeyourselfathomehere,’saidDick,whowasunacquaintedwithMrQuilp’sauthority.

           ‘Iamathome,younggentleman,’returnedthedwarf.

           Dickwasponderingwhatthesewordsmightmean,andstillmorewhatthepresenceofMrBrassmightmean,whenMrsQuilpcamehurryingdownstairs,declaringthattheroomsabovewereempty.

           ‘Empty,youfool!’saidthedwarf.

           ‘Igiveyoumyword,Quilp,’answeredhistremblingwife,‘thatIhavebeenintoeveryroomandthere’snotasoulinanyofthem.
