Hewasbeingcarriedalongtheroadatarateratherconsiderableforavehiclewithoutsprings,andundercircumstancesofphysicaluneasiness,hisheadbeingdandledupanddownonthebedofthewaggonlikeakettledrum-stick.Hethendistinguishedvoicesinconversation,comingfromtheforpartofthewaggon.Hisconcernatthisdilemma(whichwouldhavebeenalarm,hadhebeenathrivingman;butmisfortuneisafineopiatetopersonalterror)ledhimtopeercautiouslyfromthehay,andthefirstsighthebeheldwasthestarsabovehim.Charles’sWainwasgettingtowardsarightanglewiththePolestar,andGabrielconcludedthatitmustbeaboutnineo’clock—inotherwords,thathehadslepttwohours.Thissmallastronomicalcalculationwasmadewithoutanypositiveeffort,andwhilsthewasstealthilyturningtodiscover,ifpossible,intowhosehandshehadfallen.
Twofiguresweredimlyvisibleinfront,sittingwiththeirlegsoutsidethewaggon,oneofwhomwasdriving.Gabrielsoonfoundthatthiswasthewaggoner,anditappearedtheyhadcomefromCasterbridgefair,likehimself.
Aconversationwasinprogress,whichcontinuedthus:—
"Beas’twill,she’safinehandsomebodyasfar’slooksbeconcerned.Butthat’sonlytheskinofthewoman,andthesedandycattlebeasproudasaluciferintheirinsides."
"Ay—so’adoseem,BillySmallbury—so’adoseem."Thisutterancewasveryshakybynature,andmoresobycircumstance,thejoltingofthewaggonnotbeingwithoutitseffectuponthespeaker’slarynx.Itcamefromthemanwhoheldthereins.
