Therewereseveralsetsofladies’dressesinthepiece,ofsundryexpensivematerials;silksandsatins,poplinsandvelvets,allofcolourswhichfromBathsheba’sstyleofdressmighthavebeenjudgedtobeherfavourites.Thereweretwomuffs,sableandermine.Abovealltherewasacaseofjewellery,containingfourheavygoldbraceletsandseverallocketsandrings,alloffinequalityandmanufacture.ThesethingshadbeenboughtinBathandothertownsfromtimetotime,andbroughthomebystealth.Theywereallcarefullypackedinpaper,andeachpackagewaslabelled"BathshebaBoldwood,"adatebeingsubjoinedsixyearsinadvanceineveryinstance.
ThesesomewhatpatheticevidencesofamindcrazedwithcareandlovewerethesubjectofdiscourseinWarren’smalt-housewhenOakenteredfromCasterbridgewithtidingsofsentence.Hecameintheafternoon,andhisface,asthekilnglowshoneuponit,toldthetalesufficientlywell.Boldwood,aseveryonesupposedhewoulddo,hadpleadedguilty,andhadbeensentencedtodeath.
TheconvictionthatBoldwoodhadnotbeenmorallyresponsibleforhislateractsnowbecamegeneral.Factselicitedprevioustothetrialhadpointedstronglyinthesamedirection,buttheyhadnotbeenofsufficientweighttoleadtoanorderforanexaminationintothestateofBoldwood’smind.Itwasastonishing,nowthatapresumptionofinsanitywasraised,howmanycollateralcircumstanceswererememberedtowhichaconditionofmentaldiseaseseemedtoaffordtheonlyexplanation—amongothers,theunprecedentedneglectofhiscornstacksintheprevioussummer.
