           Thisdoghadoriginallybelongedtoashepherdofinferiormoralsanddreadfultemper,andtheresultwasthatGeorgeknewtheexactdegreesofcondemnationsignifiedbycursingandswearingofalldescriptionsbetterthanthewickedestoldmanintheneighbourhood.Longexperiencehadsopreciselytaughttheanimalthedifferencebetweensuchexclamationsas"Comein!"and"D––––ye,comein!"thatheknewtoahair’sbreadththerateoftrottingbackfromtheewes’tailsthateachcallinvolved,ifastaggererwiththesheepcrookwastobeescaped.Thoughold,hewascleverandtrustworthystill.

           Theyoungdog,George’sson,mightpossiblyhavebeentheimageofhismother,fortherewasnotmuchresemblancebetweenhimandGeorge.Hewaslearningthesheep-keepingbusiness,soastofollowonattheflockwhentheothershoulddie,buthadgotnofurtherthantherudimentsasyetstillfindinganinsuperabledifficultyindistinguishingbetweendoingathingwellenoughanddoingittoowell.
