           Almostbeforethefirstfaintsignofdawnappearedshearoseagain,andopenedthewindowtoobtainafullbreathingofthenewmorningair,thepanesbeingnowwetwithtremblingtearsleftbythenightrain,eachoneroundedwithapalelustrecaughtfromprimrose-huedslashesthroughacloudlowdownintheawakeningsky.Fromthetreescamethesoundofsteadydrippinguponthedriftedleavesunderthem,andfromthedirectionofthechurchshecouldhearanothernoisepeculiar,andnotintermittentliketherest,thepurlofwaterfallingintoapool.

           Liddyknockedateighto’clock,andBathshebaun-lockedthedoor.

           "Whataheavyrainwe’vehadinthenight,ma’am!"saidLiddy,whenherinquiriesaboutbreakfasthadbeenmade.

           "Yes,veryheavy."

           "Didyouhearthestrangenoisefromthechurchyard?"

           "Iheardonestrangenoise.I’vebeenthinkingitmusthavebeenthewaterfromthetowerspouts."
