Hewasafairlywell-educatedmanforoneofmiddleclass—exceptionallywelleducatedforacommonsoldier.Hespokefluentlyandunceasingly.Hecouldinthiswaybeonethingandseemanother:forinstance,hecouldspeakofloveandthinkofdinner;callonthehusbandtolookatthewife;beeagertopayandintendtoowe.
Thewondrouspowerofflatteryinpassadosatwomanisaperceptionsouniversalastoberemarkeduponbymanypeoplealmostasautomaticallyastheyrepeataproverb,orsaythattheyareChristiansandthelike,withoutthinkingmuchoftheenormouscorollarieswhichspringfromtheproposition.Stilllessisitacteduponforthegoodofthecomplementalbeingalludedto.Withthemajoritysuchanopinionisshelvedwithallthosetriteaphorismswhichrequiresomecatastrophetobringtheirtremendousmeaningsthoroughlyhome.Whenexpressedwithsomeamountofreflectivenessitseemsco-ordinatewithabeliefthatthisflatterymustbereasonabletobeeffective.Itistothecreditofmenthatfewattempttosettlethequestionbyexperiment,anditisfortheirhappiness,perhaps,thataccidenthasneversettleditforthem.
