Thesheep-washingpoolwasaperfectlycircularbasinofbrickworkinthemeadows,fulloftheclearestwater.Tobirdsonthewingitsglassysurface,reflectingthelightsky,musthavebeenvisibleformilesaroundasaglisteningCyclops’eyeinagreenface.Thegrassaboutthemarginatthisseasonwasasighttorememberlong—inaminorsortofway.Itsactivityinsuckingthemoisturefromtherichdampsodwasalmostaprocessobservablebytheeye.Theoutskirtsofthislevelwater-meadowwerediversifiedbyroundedandhollowpastures,wherejustnoweveryflowerthatwasnotabuttercupwasadaisy.Theriverslidalongnoiselesslyasashade,theswellingreedsandsedgeformingaflexiblepalisadeuponitsmoistbrink.Tothenorthofthemeadweretrees,theleavesofwhichwerenew,soft,andmoist,notyethavingstiffenedanddarkenedundersummersunanddrought,theircolourbeingyellowbesideagreen—greenbesideayellow.Fromtherecessesofthisknotoffoliagetheloudnotesofthreecuckooswereresoundingthroughthestillair.
Boldwoodwentmeditatingdowntheslopeswithhiseyesonhisboots,whichtheyellowpollenfromthebuttercupshadbronzedinartisticgradations.Atributaryofthemainstreamflowedthroughthebasinofthepoolbyaninletandoutletatoppositepointsofitsdiameter.ShepherdOak,JanCoggan,Moon,Poorgrass,CainBall,andseveralotherswereassembledhere,alldrippingwettotheveryrootsoftheirhair,andBathshebawasstandingbyinanewriding-habit—themostelegantshehadeverworn—thereinsofherhorsebeingloopedoverherarm.
