Theskywasclear—remarkablyclear—andthetwinklingofallthestarsseemedtobebutthrobsofonebody,timedbyacommonpulse.TheNorthStarwasdirectlyinthewind’seye,andsinceeveningtheBearhadswungrounditoutwardlytotheeast,tillhewasnowatarightanglewiththemeridian.Adifferenceofcolourinthestars—oftenerreadofthanseeninEngland—wasreallyperceptiblehere.ThesovereignbrilliancyofSiriuspiercedtheeyewithasteelyglitter,thestarcalledCapellawasyellow,AldebaranandBetelgueuxshonewithafieryred.
Topersonsstandingaloneonahillduringaclearmidnightsuchasthis,therolloftheworldeastwardisalmostapalpablemovement.
