Shesoonknewthusmuchoftherecusant’sappearance.Hewasagentlemanlyman,withfullanddistinctlyoutlinedRomanfeatures,theprominencesofwhichglowedinthesunwithabronze-likerichnessoftone.Hewaserectinattitude,andquietindemeanour.Onecharacteristicpre-eminentlymarkedhim—dignity.
Apparentlyhehadsometimeagoreachedthatentrancetomiddleageatwhichaman’saspectnaturallyceasestoalterforthetermofadozenyearsorso;and,artificially,awoman’sdoeslikewise.Thirty-fiveandfiftywerehislimitsofvariation—hemighthavebeeneither,oranywherebetweenthetwo.
Itmaybesaidthatmarriedmenoffortyareusuallyreadyandgenerousenoughtoflingpassingglancesatanyspecimenofmoderatebeautytheymaydiscernbytheway.
