Thisvirtuousresolutionhadscarcelybeenformed,whentheboyandthebluebag,whowereinseparablecompanions,rushedviolentlyintotheroom,andsaid(atleasttheboydid,forthebluebagtooknopartintheannouncement)thatthecasewascomingondirectly.Theintelligencewasnosoonerreceivedthanthewholepartyhurriedacrossthestreet,andbegantofighttheirwayintocourt—apreparatoryceremony,whichhasbeencalculatedtooccupy,inordinarycases,fromtwenty-fiveminutestothirty.
Mr.Weller,beingstout,casthimselfatonceintothecrowd,withthedesperatehopeofultimatelyturningupinsomeplacewhichwouldsuithim.Hissuccesswasnotquiteequaltohisexpectations;forhavingneglectedtotakehishatoff,itwasknockedoverhiseyesbysomeunseenperson,uponwhosetoeshehadalightedwithconsiderableforce.Apparentlythisindividualregrettedhisimpetuosityimmediatelyafterwards,for,mutteringanindistinctexclamationofsurprise,hedraggedtheoldmanoutintothehall,and,afteraviolentstruggle,releasedhisheadandface.
‘Samivel!’exclaimedMr.Weller,whenhewasthusenabledtobeholdhisrescuer.
Samnodded.
‘You’readutifulandaffectionatelittleboy,youare,ain’tyou,’saidMr.Weller,‘tocomea-bonnetin’yourfatherinhisoldage?’
‘HowshouldIknowwhoyouwos?’respondedtheson.
