           WhenMr.Pickwickopenedhiseyesnextmorning,thefirstobjectuponwhichtheyrestedwasSamuelWeller,seateduponasmallblackportmanteau,intentlyregarding,apparentlyinaconditionofprofoundabstraction,thestatelyfigureofthedashingMr.Smangle;whileMr.Smanglehimself,whowasalreadypartiallydressed,wasseatedonhisbedstead,occupiedinthedesperatelyhopelessattemptofstaringMr.Welleroutofcountenance.Wesaydesperatelyhopeless,becauseSam,withacomprehensivegazewhichtookinMr.Smangle’scap,feet,head,face,legs,andwhiskers,allatthesametime,continuedtolooksteadilyon,witheverydemonstrationoflivelysatisfaction,butwithnomoreregardtoMr.Smangle’spersonalsentimentsonthesubjectthanhewouldhavedisplayedhadhebeeninspectingawoodenstatue,orastraw-embowelledGuyFawkes.
